Profile

CAF, founded in 1917, is Spain's oldest railway material company.

After the Civil War, CAF helped to rebuild Spain's railways between 1940 and 1950. The company expanded its activities, consolidated its assets and launched a factory at Irún.

In 1954, it acquired control of Material Móvil y Construcciones, based in Zaragoza, which specialised in long distance travel and underground railways.

During the 1960's, CAF helped to modernize Spain's railways.

In 1969, it created a unit for R&D in order to strengthen the technological development of its products.

In 1971, it adopted its present name of Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarril.

Between 1988 and 1994, the company reorganised and modernized its factories and in 1990 it helped to build the AVE high-speed train from Madrid to Seville.

CAF began to expand abroad as of 1992, exporting and expanding its maintenance facilities.

In 1996, it designed and built the express train and Metro to Hong Kong airport. In 1997, it won the contract to make the train and carriages for the Heathrow Express, the fast train from Paddington station to Heathrow airport. In 1998, it won the contracts for trains and carriages for the Wahington, Sacramento and Pittsburgh Metros.
This represented a significant leap into the US market. In 2001, it won the contract to make the high-speed AVE trains for the Madrid-Barcelona double width line.
