Profile

In 1985, a group of professionals with recognised standing in Rioja, founded the Barón de Ley company with a view to launching a project which was then unique in the history of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin: to create a winery in the image and likeness of the Médoc \"châteaux\".

In 1991 Barón de Ley acquired El Coto de Rioja., to form the Barón de Ley Group, marking the start of one of the expansion projects with the greatest vision in the history of the Spanish and European wine sectors.

Until the year 2000, the Group made, aged and marketed wines exclusively under the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin label. However, that year witnessed the launching of two projects outside La Rioja. Specifically wine making processes were initiated at the Finca Museum winery in Cigales (Valladolid).

Spring 2001 witnessed the start of the construction of a new winery, namely Bodegas Máximo, to produce and market Vins de Pays or local wines, not coming under the Rioja but modern wines made from grape varieties enjoying international prestige. This style of wine is directed at covering the demands made by the more international markets.

Towards the end of 2004 the Group branched out into a different venture, with the commencement of work to construct the Dehesa Barón de Ley pork curing facilities, directed at curing acorn-fed Iberian hams, shoulders and loins. These facilities are located in the province of Cáceres coming under the Dehesa de Extremadura Designation of Origin.

In 2004 the group founded Viñedos Baron de Ley to manage all its vineyards.
